All heat pumps provide space heating and cooling, but the Powermiser adds year round water heating. During cooling, the Powermiser captures waste heat for domestic hot water. During heating, outside air provides the source for heating space and water. Water heating with dehumidification can also operate independently. Depending on the operating mode, energy savings for water heating are expected to be 50 to 100 percent compared to electric resistance.

The outdoor unit contains only a fan and the outdoor coil. The compressor and a water heating coil sit on top of the indoor unit. Powermiser is best suited for electric water heaters, but can work with gas water heaters, too. Efficiency ratings are SEER of 10 or 12 (cooling) and HSPF 7 (heating).
