More Drywall Backers
Drywall backing devices are gaining ground on job sites. Instead of nailing up an extra stud or blocking, builders now have several options. Backing devices have these advantages over wood:
- They take up less space in the wall and allow more insulation in corners.
- They are often less expensive.
- They can make up for irregular studs and give better drywall support.
Two products, The Nailer and No-Nail, were featured in the October 1993 issue. Here are two more options from big names in construction hardware.
Simpson Strong-Tie calls theirs the Drywall Stop (DS) and Kant-Sag gives theirs stock number S-500. Both of these are small, 20-gauge galvanized steel clips that nail to wood framing.
Kant-Sag also offers Korner-Back® (KB-78 or KB-138) which provides support along the entire edge of the drywall sheet. It's made of 26-gauge galvanized steel.
You can find a complete list of Gypsum Board Supports in the the Oikos Product Directory.
