Celo-Vent Insulated Shingle Deck

A ventilated shingle deck provides insulation over an open beam ceiling while allowing air to circulate under the shingles. Celo-Vent is a new panel from Celotex made of polyisocyanurate foam and two sheet of 1/2 inch Oriented Strand Board (OSB). The ventilation space allows air to enter at the eaves and exit through a continuous ridge vent.

Four thicknesses are available:

       Overall Thickness Foam R-value
	        2.0 6.0
	        3.0 14.3
	        4.0 21.7
	        4.5 25.8

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says that applying roofing shingles directly over insulation leads to high temperatures that deteriorate shingles. Other researchers have been unable to show that ventilation reduces temperatures or lessens degradation. If you want to keep shingles cool over open-beam ceiling, vented panels, such as this one are a good way to do it.

Editor's Note: Celotex is no longer in business. However, several other companies make vented roof panels.
