High-Tech CO Detection from Telaire

A new carbon monoxide detector from Telaire called CO Smart addresses several shortcomings of the typical low-cost CO detectors sold for residential use. UL Standard 2034 requires that detectors sound an alarm if the CO concentration reaches 100 ppm for 90 minutes. When that alarm sounds it's time to evacuate the building. However, a CO level greater than 15 can be harmful, especially over a long period. CO Smart indicates CO levels as low as 10 ppm.

A six-step "bar graph" shows the CO level. Colored LEDs progress from green to yellow to red as the CO level increases. In addition to the evacuation alarm, an early warning signal sounds at 30 ppm or when the CO level rises rapidly. A switch inside the case allows the early warning level to be reduced to 20 ppm. Early warning allows occupants to identify a CO problem and make repairs before evacuation becomes necessary.

Telaire uses an infrared detection method that reduces the chance of false alarms. Infrared detection passes light through a sample of air and responds to the specific wavelength of CO. According to Telaire, other low-cost detectors use sensors that require a physical or chemical reaction to the gas they are trying to measure. False alarms occur when these interactive sensors are fooled by other types of fumes.

Over a number of years small amounts of CO in the air continually react with the sensor causing its sensitivity to change. Several detector manufacturers recommend that the sensor be changed every two years. The infrared detector used in the CO Smart never directly interacts with airborne gases, avoiding false alarms and sensor contamination.

The technology and features used in the CO Smart make it the most expensive residential CO detector, priced just under $250. The product is undergoing final certification for UL Standard 2034.
