Solar Electric Roofing

United Solar offers innovative solar roofing products. Although disguised as standard shingles and metal roofing, these roofing panels are actually durable photovoltaic modules. They offer the same protection against the elements as premium roofing and look virtually the same.

UNI-SOLAR Architectural Standing Seam, Structural Standing Seam and PV Shingle Modules are made from thin, flexible and lightweight amorphous silicon solar cells. All three are laminated in advanced polymers--no glass is used. The roofing modules are installed alongside standard roofing materials using the same tools and methods. Installation requires no additional materials or structural enhancements. According to the company, the roofing modules will continue to generate significant power even when the array is partially shaded.

UNI-SOLAR panels have been installed in demonstration projects around the U.S., including the NAHB Research Center Home Park in Maryland, U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona and the Southface Energy and Environmental Center in Georgia.

The photovoltaic cells generate direct current which can be used by DC devices, such as lights and small appliances. An inverter can change the power to alternative current (AC) for use with standard household appliances. Batteries are generally used to store energy for later use. In some cases, electricity can be sold back to local utilities.
