Stone-Lined Water Heater

Vaughn Manufacturing is the only maker of stone-lined water heaters in the U.S. Since 1995, their tanks have used 100 percent recycled fly ash as the aggregate in the cement-like tank lining. Fly ash is waste generated by coal-burning power plants. The material used by Vaughn is certified as 100 percent post consumer waste by Scientific Certification Systems. Most water heaters are steel tanks lined with baked-on glass. Typically, the useful life is 10 to 20 years. Vaughn's steel tanks are coated on the inside with a cement-like slurry. The seamless 1Ú2 in. thick stone lining protects the tank from corroding. The service life of stone-lined tanks is two to three times longer than glass-lined tanks in all types of water conditions. "Fly ash is an extremely dense material creating an even tighter and less corrosive lining," says James Vaughn, the company president. "No one has a tank that has proven to last as long as ours."
