Virtually all insulated concrete forms are made of expanded polystyrene insulation. Unlike these, Durisol material is cement-bonded wood aggregate. Recycled wood shavings from lumber processing and construction waste constitute about 90 percent of the product. Hardened Durisol is lightweight, porous and very durable. It has been used for 53 years around the world, 43 years in Canada and seven years in the U.S. The material is molded into a wide variety of stay-in-place concrete forms. The wall form can be used for residential and commercial buildings. Other commercial applications include precast roof panels and waffle floor forms. The material is porous with sound-absorbing properties making it a good choice for highway noise barriers. Because the wood is mineralized then coated with cement, it also has an excellent fire rating and resists insect attack.
Like many other wall forms, Durisol blocks are stacked on site. Steel reinforcement is inserted and then the cores are filled with concrete to create a structural wall. Standard blocks are available for straight walls, corners and lintels. Wall blocks come in 8-in., 10-in. and 12-in. thicknesses. The insulating value of the material itself is lower than expanded polystyrene wall forms. However, the wall form's core cavities can accept rockwool inserts from 1- to 4-in. thick, which can raise the overall R-value as high as R-21.
