INVISTA, manufacturer of Antron® nylon

Antron®: The Style, Performance and Sustainability Leader
Antron®, the most recognized brand of commercial carpet fiber, is manufactured by DuPont Textiles & Interiors. Advanced soil and stain resistance, exclusive fiber technology, innovative styling and Environmentally Preferable Product certification, make carpet constructed of Antron® style, performance and sustainability leaders.

INVISTA is committed to improving the sustainability of its products, like Antron®, and maintaining a position of responsibility in the flooring industry. One of its strongest contributions to sustainability is manufacturing durable, long-lasting products that offer superior performance throughout their entire service life. When a carpet can remain on the floor for an extended period of time, less energy is used, fewer raw materials are consumed and less waste is generated. This long-lasting performance of Antron® nylon yields the best life-cycle costs and the lowest total environmental impact.

What's New: Sustainable Flooring Performance Award

In 1967, Jeffco Public Schools installed Antron® carpet at Prospect Valley Elementary School in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Although seen as an extravagant expenditure at the time, the original carpet still remains the floor, proving to be a cost effective and performance-driven material selection. For 36 years and counting, the carpet has offered a natural appeal and pleasant sense of serenity to the schools interior environment.

This year, Jeffco Public Schools received the first 2002 Antron® Sustainable Flooring Performance Award for Prospect Valley Elementary School. Jurors selected the project for how well the original carpet selection has continued to fulfill performance and design objectives, and its ability to meet challenges over time through sustainable material selection. When carpet can remain on the floor for an extended period of time, less energy is used, fewer raw materials are consumed and less waste is generated. The specification of Antron® nylon and a well-planned maintenance program yields the best life-cycle costs and the lowest total environmental impact.

The school system received a $1000 cash prize for their award and a $1000 grant for Architectural Alliance, the environmental research project of their choice.

Installed in 1967, Guardian 1, constructed of Antron nylon, was the floorcovering solution for Prospect Valley Elementary School.

Today

Over three decades later, the specification of Antron nylon proves to be a well-planned and sustainable solution.

Environmentally Preferable Product Certified
Antron® nylon is the first and only carpet fiber to be certified by an independent third party as an Environmentally Preferable Product. Environmentally Preferable Product certification takes key factors into consideration to identify products that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared to other products that serve the same purpose.

All Antron® BCF fibers, manufactured in North America, meet Environmentally Preferable Product guidelines due to several key factors:
  • Product performance significantly better than what is typical of commercial carpet fibers.
  • Product manufacturing with a significantly smaller total environmental impact.
  • Use of significantly more "green energy".
  • Documentation of significant efforts towards protecting the health, safety and the environment.
  • End-of-life responsibility.

Once an Environmentally Preferable Product standard for a product is developed and an Environmentally Preferable Product certification issued, both must be re-evaluated every year. This process ensures continuous improvement in the total environmental impact of the product.

Antron® achieved EPP certification from Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) in June 2002. The SCS Environmentally Preferable Product Certification Program is built upon ISO-14000 standards including the life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) approach as defined in ISO-14042 and the August 1999 EPA Environmental Preferable Purchasing Guidance document. All SCS-developed standards are independently peer reviewed to ensure thoroughness and impartiality.

End of Life Responsibility
The DuPont™ Carpet Reclamation® Program also is certified by SCS as a viable solution for recycling used carpet. It is the only national program that takes in carpets of type 6,6 nylon as well as all other fiber types. Since 1991, the program has collected over 90 million pounds of carpet, saving over 200,000 cubic yards of landfill space. Some of the new products using recycled carpet material from the program include carpet cushion, carpet backing, sod reinforcement, automotive resins and soundproofing/padding.
